History of Deer Park

The Deer Park area was established in the late 17th century as a section of Huntington South. Charles Wilson developed a large farm in 1853 and started what we now know as Deer Park, NY. The soil-rich area was great for growing fruits and dahlias and has primarily been a farming town for most of its history.

The area also provided most of the ornamental shrubs and trees in Central Park. Deer Park was known for its thriving wildlife and annual dahlia festivals. In 1842, eleven years before Charles Wilson, the Long Island Rail Road established the first railroad station in Babylon, which resulted in a stagecoach route down Deer Park Avenue to the Town of Babylon.

This made Deer Park a prime destination for travelers headed to Ronkonkoma and the Great South Bay area. The rail also aided the establishment and growth of many local industries in the rural community by the turn of the 20th century.

As with most rural communities, the rail opened many doors for the Deer Park area. Early reports suggest that the community consisted of around a dozen homes, a schoolhouse, and one shop in 1872, whereas today Deer Park, NY is the second most populated hamlet in Babylon, with over 27,000 residents.
