History
Centereach, formerly known as West Middle Island, has a rich history of name changes. In the early 20th century, it was called New Village, but due to another village with the same name, it was renamed Centereach in 1916 to reflect its central location on Long Island, earning the nickname "The Heart of Long Island."
Over the years, Centereach has grown from a small hamlet to a thriving suburban community. Its population increased from 628 in 1940 to 32,000 by 2020. Early suburban developments like Dawn Estates and Eastwood Village in the 1950s contributed to Centereach’s residential expansion.
In 1998, Centereach became home to New York State’s first single-point urban interchange at Middle Country Road and Nicolls Road. Historically a working-class area, Centereach has seen significant growth in recent years, with Centereach real estate attracting higher-income residents. As of October 2023, the median home price in Centereach was $524,000, reflecting its evolving market.
